Safe Routes to School (SRTS)

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a nationwide initiative that encourages and enables students to walk and bicycle to school by implementing projects and activities that improve the health, well-being, and safety of children. The Safe Routes to School program is supported through a partnership between The San Mateo County Office of Education, Redwood City Parks and Recreation, Redwood City School District, and Redwood City Together. Recent Milestones:

  • The SRTS Specialist and Task Force collaboratively updated the SRTS 2-year work plan, which outlines 7 priority goals and strategies aimed to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety near schools, with a target completion date of June 2026.

  • The group introduced a 15mph school zone pilot program at Roosevelt and Henry Ford Schools for enhanced child safety in partnership with the City’s Community Development and Transportation department. Designated areas prioritize safety by reducing speed, mitigating accident risks, raising driver awareness, and addressing community concerns.

  • The Youth Unlimited Bus Pass Program, in partnership with RCSD and SMCOE, continued its impact by providing free bus passes for 861 youth in our community and helping families save approximately $280,000.

  • In partnership with the Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Teen program, Safe Routes to School implemented the SPOKES program at McKinley Institute of Technology, utilizing the School Travel Fellowship grant. This engaged 10 low-income students in a 6-week program focused on bike safety skills, basic maintenance and repair, and provided them with new BMX bikes, helmets, and repair toolkits upon completion.

  • Hosted Bike to the Library Day, an event where over 200 community members were engaged to promote active transportation and program opportunities.
